I love attention — any kind!
“She seems fine,” said Dr. Gibson. “She’s a real trouper, this one. Not many puppies her age could go through what she went through and still be so sweet and loving.” The vet frowned. “It’s hard to believe someone would abandon such a great pup, and a purebred at that. I think you were right about her being a Havanese. Once you give her a bath, you’ll see how silky her coat will be.”
“Can we check her for a microchip?” Lizzie’s dad asked.
“Sure,” said Dr. Gibson. She reached into a drawer for the wand she used to check for the tiny chip that would tell her how to find a lost dog’s owners. If Angel had caring owners, they might have had a chip implanted. Dr. Gibson bent over to wave the wand over Angel’s head and body, then waved it again, more slowly. She shook her head. “No chip, and I didn’t see a tattoo on her, either. No way to know if she has a family.”
She straightened up and opened the laptop on her counter. “I always check Facebook for missing dog alerts,” she said. “I haven’t seen any recently, but let’s look again. We can post her picture, too, with a description of where she was found. It’s amazing how quickly word can spread through the Internet.”
“She’s going to be on the news, too,” Lizzie told the vet. She explained about the TV crew.
“Excellent,” said Dr. Gibson. “If she has owners, they’re sure to step forward to claim her. And if not, you’ll have no trouble finding her a new home. Such a sweetie!” She used her phone to snap a few pictures of Angel in Lizzie’s arms, then showed them to Lizzie and her dad. “She looks great in pictures, too — even before a bath!”
Lizzie helped pick the best picture, and Dr. Gibson posted it on the missing dogs page with a little background on where she had been found and how she had been rescued. “If anyone’s looking for her, we’ve done what we can,” Dr. Gibson said when she was finished. “I’ll notify the police and animal control, and I’m sure you’ll be checking in with Ms. Dobbins.”
Ms. Dobbins was the director of Caring Paws, the animal shelter where Lizzie volunteered. Lizzie put her hand over her mouth. “Oh, no! I was supposed to help out there today after our hike! With all the excitement I totally forgot.”
“We can call Ms. Dobbins as soon as we leave here,” Dad said.
“If anyone would understand, she would,” said Dr. Gibson. “Animals always come first in her book.”
“Mine, too,” said Lizzie, looking down at the sweet white puppy nestled in her lap. What was more important than taking care of an animal who needed help?
